SUMMARY:Digging Roman Caerleon: The Priory Field Excavation\, 2007 -2010
DESCRIPTION:Speakers: Dr Peter Guest and Prof. Andrew Gardner\nAbstract:  A major excavation in Priory Field\, carried out between 2007 and 2010\, produced ground breaking new evidence for Caerleon’s rich Roman – and early ‘post-Roman’ – history. The excavation uncovered the front range of a large masonry courtyard store-building\, which was the first building of its kind excavated to modern standards in the Roman Empire. Some of the exceptional finds recovered include a rare example of an elaborately decorated horse’s headpiece and several sets of dismantled body armour. This talk by the excavation’s directors will highlight some of the Priory Field project’s most significant discoveries\, describing when the courtyard building was built\, what was stored in it\, when it ceased to be used\, and what happened to it in the years after the ending of Roman Britannia at the beginning of the 5th century.\nAn introduction by MAA president Jeremy Knight will be followed by Dr Peter Guest speaking about the excavations.\nThe Q & A session will be followed by a presentation about the Caerleon Gateway Partnership Project.Refreshments will be available after the talk. There will be an opportunity to browse the bookstall hosted by Archaeopress\, and purchase a signed copy of the recently published book about the excavation written by Peter Guest and Andrew Gardiner.\n\nThis event is in person and online.\nFree admission by ticket only\n\n\nTo obtain your free ticket use the following links. In person \nhttps://www.ticketsource.co.uk/monmouthshire-antiquarian-association/digging-roman-caerleon-the-priory-field-excavation-2007-2010/2026-01-16/19:30/t-glxomga \nOnline \nhttps://www.ticketsource.co.uk/monmouthshire-antiquarian-association/digging-roman-caerleon-the-priory-field-excavation-2007-2010/2026-01-16/19:30/t-jxkypmx

SUMMARY:MAA and Cambrian Archaeological Association walk - Buckholt Bryngaer Hillfort
DESCRIPTION:Sunday October 19th 2025: Buckholt Bryngaer Hillfort\, Monmouthshire \nStart at 11.00\, return to start by 4.00\, bring your own lunch. \nWalk leader: Jan Bailey (Monmouthshire Antiquarian Association)                   \nHill top tour : Katie Churchill (Churchill Archaeology) \n This walk will visit the Buckholt Bryngaer Hillfort\, north of Monmouth. In 2023 The Buckholt Bryngaer CIC sponsored excavation work on a post medieval building\, with some remedial work on the hillfort enclosure and ditches. It soon became apparent that this hitherto overlooked site is hiding many secrets\, including a significant neolithic camp\, a possible bronze age barrow\, iron age hillfort\, medieval settlement and a charcoal burning industry\, so can it truly be described as multi period. The work has caught the attention of Cadw\, Amgueddfa Cymru and a number of academic interests\, but essentially it remains a community excavation which has been lead by Katie\, who will be giving us a tour of the main features of the site. Work is likely to continue in 2025 so this walk will be an opportunity to find out the very latest from the 2025 season. The site overlooks the confluence of the Wye and Monnow and is the perfect place for a scenic walk and a spot of “forest bathing”. \nThe visit will involve a lot of walking on forest tracks and footpaths. It is not too steep for the most part\, but is not suitable for wheelchairs\, pushchairs or people with limited mobility. Depending on numbers remote parking and access to site will be arranged. Details of meeting points and other details will be circulated nearer the date. Booking is essential and should be made to \nSecretary@maa.wales.
