MAA and Cambrian Archaeological Association walk – Buckholt Bryngaer Hillfort

19 October at 11:00 am - 3:30 pm

Sunday October 19th 2025: Buckholt Bryngaer Hillfort, Monmouthshire

Start at 11.00, return to start by 4.00, bring your own lunch.

Walk leader: Jan Bailey (Monmouthshire Antiquarian Association)

Hill top tour : Katie Churchill (Churchill Archaeology)

This walk will visit the Buckholt Bryngaer Hillfort, north of Monmouth. In 2023 The Buckholt Bryngaer CIC sponsored excavation work on a post medieval building, with some remedial work on the hillfort enclosure and ditches. It soon became apparent that this hitherto overlooked site is hiding many secrets, including a significant neolithic camp, a possible bronze age barrow, iron age hillfort, medieval settlement and a charcoal burning industry, so can it truly be described as multi period. The work has caught the attention of Cadw, Amgueddfa Cymru and a number of academic interests, but essentially it remains a community excavation which has been lead by Katie, who will be giving us a tour of the main features of the site. Work is likely to continue in 2025 so this walk will be an opportunity to find out the very latest from the 2025 season. The site overlooks the confluence of the Wye and Monnow and is the perfect place for a scenic walk and a spot of “forest bathing”.

The visit will involve a lot of walking on forest tracks and footpaths. It is not too steep for the most part, but is not suitable for wheelchairs, pushchairs or people with limited mobility. Depending on numbers remote parking and access to site will be arranged. Details of meeting points and other details will be circulated nearer the date. Booking is essential and should be made to

Secretary@maa.wales.
